We get it, learning to drive is a huge milestone, and it can feel a bit overwhelming when the rules of the game change while you’re already playing. But don’t worry! At Burton Driving School, we’re all about keeping things simple. Whether you’re just starting your driving lessons in Burton-on-Trent or you’re getting ready for the big day, we’ve put together this quick-start guide to help you navigate the new system without the stress.
The New Landscape: Why the Changes?
The DVSA has been working hard to reduce those massive backlogs and stop people from “test-flipping”, where people book tests they aren’t ready for and then sell them on. While these rules might seem a bit strict, they’re actually designed to make sure that learners who are truly ready for their test can get a slot more easily.
If you’re taking driving lessons in Burton-on-Trent, these rules apply to you right now. Let’s break down exactly what you need to know and, more importantly, what you need to do today.
1. The “Two-Strike” Rule (Active Now!)
As of March 31, 2026, the DVSA has slashed the number of times you can change your driving test booking. Previously, you could move your date around up to six times. Now? You only get two changes.
This is a massive shift. It means you can’t just “grab a slot” and hope for the best, planning to move it later. If you use up your two changes and then realize you still aren’t ready, you’ll have to cancel the test entirely, lose your fee, and start the booking process from scratch.
Penny’s Pro Tip: Before you book that test, have a serious chat with your instructor. Are you consistently hitting those goals during your driving lessons in Burton-upon-Trent? If you’re still stalling at the Horninglow crossroads or struggling with your reverse park, maybe hold off on booking until you’re “test-ready.” Check out our guide on how much do driving lessons cost to help plan your budget for those final polish-up sessions.

2. The Big Deadline: May 12, 2026 (That’s in 5 Days!)
This is the one you really need to pay attention to. Starting next Tuesday, May 12, 2026, driving instructors will no longer be able to book or manage tests on behalf of their pupils.
In the past, many of us at Burton Driving School would help our students by managing their bookings to ensure the car was available. From May 12th, the power (and the responsibility) is entirely in your hands. You must be the one to log into the GOV.UK website and handle your own business.
Do this first:
- Log in now: Make sure you have your provisional licence number and your theory test certificate number handy.
- Check your details: Ensure your email and phone number are correct on the DVSA system.
- Talk to us: If we previously managed a booking for you, check in with us to make sure you have all the details you need to take over the reigns.
We have a great article on common driving test booking mistakes that you should definitely read before you head over to the official portal.
3. The “Stay Local” Rule (Coming June 9, 2026)
This is a brand new one. From June 9, 2026, the DVSA is introducing a “3-centre rule.” This means that if you need to move your test, you can only move it to one of the three nearest test centres to your original booking.
For those of us doing driving lessons in Burton-on-Trent, this usually means you’ll be looking at:
- Burton
- Derby
- Lichfield
You won’t be able to book a test in Burton and then move it to a quiet coastal town in Wales just because there’s a slot available. The DVSA wants you to take your test in the area where you’ve been learning. This is actually a good thing! You want to pass your test on the roads you know, not in a strange city where the roundabouts look like something out of a sci-fi movie.

How to Prepare Your Driving Lessons in Burton-on-Trent
With these new restrictions, your preparation is more important than ever. You don’t want to waste one of your two precious “changes” because you felt nervous.
- Mock Tests are King: We highly recommend doing at least two full mock tests during your driving lessons in Burton-on-Trent. This gives you a realistic idea of whether you’re ready to commit to a booking.
- Anxiety Management: If the thought of the new rules is making your heart race, check out our 6 top tips to overcome anxiety. Learning to stay calm is just as important as knowing how to steer.
- Check the Reviews: See what other local learners are saying about their experiences with the new system on our reviews page.
What Counts as a “Change”?
It’s important to know exactly what eats into your “two-strike” limit.
- IT COUNTS AS A CHANGE IF: You move the date, change the time, or change the test centre location.
- IT DOES NOT COUNT IF: You are just updating your email address, or if the DVSA cancels your test (due to weather or examiner illness). If they move it, it’s on them, not you!
If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, remember that we’ve seen it all before. From the introduction of Sat-Navs to the new “Show Me, Tell Me” questions, we’ve helped thousands of people navigate change and come out the other side with a pink licence.
